  A Thinking Problem

It started out innocently enough. I began to think at parties now and then - just to loosen up and be a part of the crowd.
 
Inevitably, though, one thought led to another and soon I was more than just a  social thinker.

I began to  think alone -- "to relax," I told myself -- but I knew it wasn't true.   Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was  thinking all the time.
 
That was when things began to sour at home.  One evening I turned off the TV  and asked my wife about the meaning of life.  She spent that  night at her mother's.

I began to  think on the job.  I knew that thinking and employment don't mix,  but I couldn't help myself.
 
I began to avoid friends at lunchtime so I could read Thoreau, Muir, Confucius,   Camus and Kafka.  I would return to the office dizzied and confused, asking, "What is it exactly that we are doing here?"

One day the  boss called me in.  He said, "Listen, I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your thinking has become a real problem.  If you  don't stop thinking on the job, you'll have to find another job."
 
This gave me a  lot to think about.  I came home early after my conversation with  the boss. "Honey," I confessed, "I've been thinking..."

"I know you've  been thinking," she said, "and I want a divorce!"  "But Honey,  surely it's not that serious."  "It is serious," she said, her lower lip aquiver.
 
"You think as much as college professors and college professors don't make any  money, so if you keep on thinking, we won't have any money!"

"That's a  fallacious syllogism," I said impatiently.

She exploded in tears of rage and frustration, but I was in no mood to deal with the emotional drama.

"I'm going to  the library," I snarled as I stomped out the door.
 
I headed for the library, in the mood for some John Locke.  I roared into the  parking lot with NPR on the radio and ran up to the big glass  doors.

They didn't open.  The library was closed.


To this day, I  believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night.

Leaning on the  unfeeling glass and whimpering for Emerson, a poster caught my eye,  "Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?" it asked.
 
You probably recognize that line.  It comes from the standard Thinkers  Anonymous poster.

This is why I  am what I am today: a recovering thinker.

I never miss a  TA meeting.  At each meeting we watch a non-educational video; last week it was "Porky's." Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting.

I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home.  Life just seemed  easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking.  I think the road  to recovery is nearly complete for me.
 

Today I took  the final step... I joined the Democratic  Party.

White congressional candidate wants to participate in forum, but is told she can’t 

 Because Liz Carter is white, she’s banned from debating Democrat Rep. Hank Johnson and the other black candidates running for his Georgia congressional seat at a candidate forum in Atlanta tonight.

The forum, moderated by Newsmakers Live, is solely for the black Republicans and Democrats running for Johnson’s 4th Congressional District seat, Carter took to the Internet to say.

Carter, a Republican, expressed her disappointment on Twitter Wednesday, asking, “What happened to diversity?”

“We called them, we asked to participate,” said Carter’s campaign manager, Cheryl Prater. But she said Newsmaker Live’s event moderator, Maynard Eaton, told the campaign that because Carter is white, she’s only allowed to sit in the audience and not participate.

Newsmakers Live is a black media organization, which according to its website has a “global urbane perspective” and publishes a weekly journal and video show that “embodies a unique ‘infotainment’ concept that specializes in intense interviewing of prominent personalities and political figures.” Its website includes videos titled, “Are Black Babies An Endangered Species,” and “Moving African-American Businesses to the Next Level.”

Maynard, the editor-in-chief of Newsmakers Live, did not immediately respond to a request for comment by e-mail. But a flier advertising the event’s guests only shows the photos of the three black Democrats and one black Republican running for the seat: Hank Johnson,Vernon Jones and Connie Stokes, all Democrats, and Republican candidate Cory Ruth.

“By inviting this black Republican, they’ve made it racial,” said Prater. There are a couple other white candidates who were not invited to the program, Prater said.

Carter, she said, has worked to garner black support in the heavily black district and was endorsed by the College Republicans at Atlanta’s predominantly black Morehouse College.

Tonight the candidate will at least make an attempt to get on stage. “We’re showing up,” Prater said.

This reliably Democratic district congressional district has been the subject of embarrassment over the years, as firebrand conspiracist Cynthia McKinney once held the seat. Among Johnson’s gaffes, he became an Internet sensation this year by suggesting, on camera during a congressional hearing, that the island of Guam could “tip over and capsize” due to overpopulation.

Georgia’s primary is on July 20.

Taxing the Internet in Colorado

I advertise my driving business in many areas. I spend alot of $ each month advertising.
Our Colorado Legislature just put into effect HB-1193 which imposes sales tax on online retailers.
No other state has these rules.
Now I can no longer advertise with Amazon because they refuse to participate in Colorado's plan.

We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to inform you that the Colorado government recently enacted a law to impose sales tax regulations on online retailers. The regulations are burdensome and no other state has similar rules. The new regulations do not require online retailers to collect sales tax. Instead, they are clearly intended to increase the compliance burden to a point where online retailers will be induced to "voluntarily" collect Colorado sales tax -- a course we won't take.

We and many others strongly opposed this legislation, known as HB 10-1193, but it was enacted anyway. The US Supreme Court has defined what would be constitutional, and if Colorado would repeal the current law or follow the constitutional approach to collection, we would welcome the opportunity to reinstate Colorado-based Associates.

You may express your views of Colorado's new law to members of the General Assembly  and to Governor Ritter, who signed the bill.

As Women’s History Month begins, a look at how the media treated conservative women in 2009.

March is Women’s History Month, in which we acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of women in history and in society today.

But for a select group of women – conservative women – their accomplishments and contributions are rarely celebrated but often demeaned and mocked in sexist – and crassly sexual – ways.

The Culture & Media Insitute looked back at what the media had to say over the past year about some of today’s most prominent conservative women, including Michelle Malkin, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sarah Palin and Liz Cheney, and compiled a list of the 10 worst attacks on these women who dare to speak out in favor of conservative values.

Much of the criticism was the worst sort of misogyny with a dose of violence and disgusting adolescent sex references thrown in for good measure. The media outlets in question ranged from Playboy magazine to MSNBC to Sirius XM radio and included comments from both men and women.

The message that rang through loud and clear was that perspectives from conservative women were not appreciated or welcomed, and if a woman stepped out of line, she deserved whatever treatment she received.

Harry Reid Among The Race Hypocrites

By now most of you have seen Harry Reid's reported remarks, from a book on the 2008 election, enthusing that Barack Obama could be a successful presidential candidate because he was "light-skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." The real story here is the Left's hypocrisy: Reid has committed a sin that would be unpardonable by anyone but a Democratic politician.

Lets see, Yesterday I was at a protest in front of Senator Bennet's office. He had a meeting where he spoke to invited guests only. Really, he just doesn't get it, from his comments about us in this mornings paper. He says he wants more reasoned debate, yet he won't talk to anyone with opposing ideas. He says he wants less rhetoric but it seems to me that his side is full of rhetoric. He said that "our politics seems unbelievably trivial and unhelpful," and opposition to the health care bill is simply unhinged from the facts. Gawd I hope he's voted out of office this next election. Chosen, not elected, the first time.

Now today I went to a kick-off rally for the upcoming election season for conservatism. Some great motivational speakers talking up the caucus system of choosing our candidates. Good stuff, I bought a book and had it signed by the author who was standing there.
   I didn't know that Colorado is one of only three states that still has the caucus system. We are very lucky to have it, it truly is grass root politics.

Healthcare bill passes

Democrat version of the health bill passed the Senate. Jammed through and crammed through and down our throats. Not a single Republican vote. Paid off and threatened Senators the old fashioned Chicago way of Politics. When the American people find out about the shyster dealings of this bill they'll be so stupid as to try and blame the Republicans.

Mary Landrieu (D-La.), one of the 60 votes needed to keep the legislation alive. The wavering lawmaker was offered a sweetener: at least $100 million in extra federal money for her home state.
And so it came to pass that Landrieu walked onto the Senate floor midafternoon Saturday to announce her aye vote -- and to trumpet the financial "fix" she had arranged for Louisiana. "I am not going to be defensive," she declared. "And it's not a $100 million fix. It's a $300 million fix."

Who better to bundle

Regulations intended to shed light on bundling by lobbyists are coming up short. According to an Associated Press review published last week, which compared invitations to fund-raisers hosted by lobbyists and campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission from March 19 through June, lawmakers have yet to disclose funds they raised at 195 events.
Although the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act requiring lawmakers to report cash “bundled” by lobbyists went into effect in March of this year, Oonly about two-dozen lawmakers between then and June have reported funds raised by lobbyists, the AP found, even though the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act requiring lawmakers to report cash “bundled” by lobbyists went into effect in March of this year. What can a lobbyist do to escape disclosure? Don’t touch the money, don’t take credit, raise less than $16,000 (the threshold for reporting, which does not include contributions from the lobbyist and his/her spouse) or work as an in-house lobbyist for a business, union or trade association and have your employer officially sponsor the event. HLOGA was passed in 2007 in response to the Jack Abramoff scandal, but the AP concludes that “the circumstances under which a member of Congress is legally bound to disclose a lobbyist’s fund-raising are so narrow that, had the law been in effect during Abramoff’s lobbying days, it wouldn’t have exposed much, if any, of his congressional fundraising money trail.” The Hill reported a similar story this week.

Dems lied, transparency died

Senate Finance Committee Democrats have rejected a GOP amendment that would have required a health overhaul bill to be available online for 72 hours before the committee votes.
Republicans argued that transparency is an Obama administration goal. They also noted that their constituents are demanding that they read bills before voting.
The Democrats noted that unlike other committees, the Finance Committee works off conceptual language that describes policies — instead of legislative language that ultimately becomes law, and which the GOP amendment would have required.
Democrats accepted an alternate amendment to make conceptual language available online before a vote.
Currently, the only version of Chairman Max Baucus’s proposal we have is a 223-page draft (PDF) that is written in plain English and explains the bill in conceptual terms. Republicans argued that until the bill is written in legislative language it will be impossible for the CBO to provide an accurate cost estimate.
The Bunning ammendment would have required the committee to have the legislative language of the bill, along with the CBO cost estimate, posted on the internet for 72 hours before a vote.
Democrats argued that waiting for the legislative languange to be written, and for the CBO to evaluate it, would needlessly delay the process by weeks.
“Let’s be honest about it, most people don’t read the legislative language,” Sen. John Kerry said.
The Bunning amendment was defeated by a 12 to 11 vote,
with Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln the only Democrat voting in favor.
