White congressional candidate wants to participate in forum, but is told she can’t 

 Because Liz Carter is white, she’s banned from debating Democrat Rep. Hank Johnson and the other black candidates running for his Georgia congressional seat at a candidate forum in Atlanta tonight.

The forum, moderated by Newsmakers Live, is solely for the black Republicans and Democrats running for Johnson’s 4th Congressional District seat, Carter took to the Internet to say.

Carter, a Republican, expressed her disappointment on Twitter Wednesday, asking, “What happened to diversity?”

“We called them, we asked to participate,” said Carter’s campaign manager, Cheryl Prater. But she said Newsmaker Live’s event moderator, Maynard Eaton, told the campaign that because Carter is white, she’s only allowed to sit in the audience and not participate.

Newsmakers Live is a black media organization, which according to its website has a “global urbane perspective” and publishes a weekly journal and video show that “embodies a unique ‘infotainment’ concept that specializes in intense interviewing of prominent personalities and political figures.” Its website includes videos titled, “Are Black Babies An Endangered Species,” and “Moving African-American Businesses to the Next Level.”

Maynard, the editor-in-chief of Newsmakers Live, did not immediately respond to a request for comment by e-mail. But a flier advertising the event’s guests only shows the photos of the three black Democrats and one black Republican running for the seat: Hank Johnson,Vernon Jones and Connie Stokes, all Democrats, and Republican candidate Cory Ruth.

“By inviting this black Republican, they’ve made it racial,” said Prater. There are a couple other white candidates who were not invited to the program, Prater said.

Carter, she said, has worked to garner black support in the heavily black district and was endorsed by the College Republicans at Atlanta’s predominantly black Morehouse College.

Tonight the candidate will at least make an attempt to get on stage. “We’re showing up,” Prater said.

This reliably Democratic district congressional district has been the subject of embarrassment over the years, as firebrand conspiracist Cynthia McKinney once held the seat. Among Johnson’s gaffes, he became an Internet sensation this year by suggesting, on camera during a congressional hearing, that the island of Guam could “tip over and capsize” due to overpopulation.

Georgia’s primary is on July 20.

Who better to bundle

Regulations intended to shed light on bundling by lobbyists are coming up short. According to an Associated Press review published last week, which compared invitations to fund-raisers hosted by lobbyists and campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission from March 19 through June, lawmakers have yet to disclose funds they raised at 195 events.

But McMahon's history is hardly that of a hardcore Republican.

McMahon and husband Vince McMahon, who is the chairman of the WWE, have contributed nearly $90,000 to federal candidates and committees since 1989, the Center for Responsive Politics has found. And of this sum, 51 percent has gone to Democrats and 47 percent has gone to Republicans.

Jane Norton formally enters Senate race

Saying she had become "more and more alarmed about the direction our nation is headed," Jane Norton, a Republican and former lieutenant governor, formally launched her 2010 campaign for the U.S. Senate today with rallies spanning the state, including one at the downtown Antlers Hilton.

Norton's theme here and at appearances in Denver and Grand Junction was the size and reach of the federal government.

"At every turn, Washington's giant hand seems to be grabbing everything in sight," she said, "seizing control of our car companies, banks, insurance companies, exploding the national debt and chipping away at individual liberty."

She promised to be "a senator who will stand up to big government power grabs."

The ACORN-linked, “public option”-mongering Service Employees International Union has its own black eye to contend with. A former official with SEIU Local 1000 in California was slapped with a 25-year prison sentence for charges of child molestation and making/possessing child pornography. News10 reports a troubling angle:

Jaime Enrique Feliciano, who served as president of Service Employees International Union Local 1000 representing thousands of Sacramento-area state workers, had previous convictions for child molestation and failure to register as a sex offender.

Previous convictions? ACORN and SEIU deserve each other.

Lack of bipartisanship

Steele and the RNC should be continuously pounding the media with commentary about the total lack of bipartisanship as a deliberate tactic by the Democrats, particularly by Reid in the Senate and Pelosi in the House. The Dems have done everything possible to lock the Republicans out of any debate regarding legislation and most people are unaware of this.

It is a totally cynical attempt at capitalizing on their takeover of government by completely excluding opposing viewpoints.

For years the Bush Administration was criticized for not cleaning up enough of the nation's most contaminated waste sites. The O administration has plans for doing even less.
Environmental groups and some democratic lawmakers railed against President George W. Bush's cleanup record. But this time, they're shying away from speaking out.

Specter To Switch Parties

Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning.

Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next senator from Minnesota. (Former senator Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

"I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary," said Specter in a statement. "I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election."

He added: "Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans."

President Obama was informed of Specter's decision at around 10:25 a.m., according to White House officials, and reached out to the senator minutes later to tell him "you have my full support," and we are "thrilled to have you."

Specter as a Democrat would also fundamentally alter the 2010 calculus in Pennsylvania as he was expected to face a difficult primary challenge next year from former Rep. Pat Toomey. The only announced Democrat in the race is former National Constitution Center head Joe Torsella although several other candidates are looking at the race.

The precariousness of Specter's political position -- a Republican in a Democratic-leaning state -- was on display earlier this year when he was one of three GOP senators to back President Obama's $787 billion economic stimulus plan. That vote was strongly condemned by conservative Republicans and Toomey used that vote as the launching pad for his candidacy.

Because of the shrinking Republican vote in the state, Specter was seen as a dead man walking politically in the primary with polling showing him trailing Toomey by ten or more points. The bar for Specter to run as an independent was also extremely high due to the rules governing such a third party candidacy.

That left a Democratic candidacy as Specter's best option if he wanted to remain in the Senate beyond 2010.
